What it is

The Linux foundation is a non-profit trade association to promote, protect and advance Linux & collaborate development of Linux based software and "Operating Systems"; the foundation is supported by Cisco, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, Oracle, Qualcomm and Samsung and developers around the world.


The Linux Foundation promotes, protects, and standardizes Linux "by providing a comprehensive set of services to compete effectively with closed platforms". The origin of the foundation can be traced back to the year 2000, with its original goals being to "accelerate the deployment of Linux for enterprise computing" & "to be the recognized center-of-gravity for the Linux industry".
